The twenty-fifth IDC High-Performance Computing (HPC) User Forum meeting.
The principal tasks of the meeting were to:
• Share information among HPC users and vendors for improving the health of
the HPC industry
• Continue showcasing examples of HPC "Leadership and Partnerships" in
government, industry, and academia
• Further explore the challenges associated with rampant parallelism
• Discuss current practices and goals in numerical weather prediction and
climate modeling
• Learn more about Phase 3 of the DARPA High Productivity Computing Systems
(HPCS) program
• Discuss entry-level HPC issues, requirements, and future directions
• Continue examining the strengths and weaknesses of various processor
types

2006 HPC USER FORUMS:
April 10-12, 2006, Richmond, Virginia
The HPC User Forum meeting took place at the historic Jefferson Hotel in
Richmond, Virginia.
The principal tasks of the meeting were to:
• Share information among HPC users and vendors for improving the health of
the HPC industry
• Continue showcasing examples of HPC "Leadership and Partnerships" in
government, industry, and academia
• Begin an in-depth exploration of HPC storage and data management systems
May 29-30, 2006, Bologna, Italy
The first of two spring 2006 High-Performance Computing (HPC) User Forum
international meetings took place in Bologna, Italy, was hosted by CINECA.
The principal tasks of the meeting were to:
• Promote dialogue between U.S. and European HPC users and vendors to
improve the health of the HPC industry
• And exchange information about HPC user successes and issues in
government, industry, and academia
June 1-2, 2006, Zurich, Switzerland
The second of two spring 2005 High-Performance Computing (HPC) User Forum
international meetings took place in Zürich, Switzerland, was hosted by ETH
Zürich.
The principal tasks of the meeting were to:
• Promote dialogue between U.S. and European HPC users and vendors for
improving the health of the HPC industry
• And to exchange information about HPC user successes and issues in
government, industry, and academia
September 18-20, 2006, Denver, Colorado
The High-Performance Computing (HPC) User Forum meeting took place at the
historic Brown Palace Hotel in Denver, Colorado.
The principal tasks of the meeting were to:
• Continue showcasing examples of HPC "Leadership and Partnerships" in
government, industry, and academia
• Continue an in-depth exploration of HPC storage and data management
systems
• Provide an overview of petascale computing initiatives around the world
• Explore the growing array of processor options and the related trends
toward heterogeneous HPC systems that couple multiple processor types
October 26-27, 2006, Manchester, England (UK)
The High-Performance Computing (HPC) User Forum took place at the historic
Midland Hotel in Manchester, England
The principal tasks of the meeting were to:
• Promote dialogue between U.S. and European HPC users and vendors for

2005 HPC USER FORUMS:
January 27, 2005, Yokohama, Japan
The HPC User Forum held its first meeting in Asia at the Earth Simulator
Center in Yokohama, Japan
The meeting goals included:
• To create a dialogue between US and Asian HPC users
• To help improve the overall health of the HPC industry
• With the recognition that the Asian market dynamics are different from
U.S. market dynamics
April 12-13, 2005, Sundance, Utah
The April 2005 High-Performance Computing (HPC) User Forum meeting took
place in Sundance
The principal tasks of the meeting were to:
• Share information among HPC users and vendors for improving the health of
the HPC industry
• Learn about HPC user successes in government, industry and academia
• Explore the meeting's special focuses on achievements, issues and trends
in computational fluid dynamics (CFD)
• Explore the developments in programming languages, performance modeling
and benchmarking
May 5-6, 2005, Warsaw, Poland
The May 2005 High-Performance Computing (HPC) User Forum international
meeting took place in Warsaw, Poland and was hosted by Warsaw University's
Interdisciplinary Center for Mathematical and Computational Modeling (ICM).
The principal tasks of the meeting were to: promote dialogue between U.S.
and European HPC users, vendors and IDC for improving the health of the HPC
industry; and to exchange information about HPC user successes and issues
in government, industry and academia.
September 26-28, 2005, Oak Ridge, Tennessee
The September 2005 High-Performance Computing (HPC) User Forum meeting took
place at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
The principal tasks of the meeting were to:
• Explore the meeting theme of HPC "Leadership and Partnerships" in
government, industry and academia
• Including hardware and software challenges in moving toward petascale
computing by 2010
• Leverage the ORNL host site expertise by learning more about leading-edge
HPC developments and facilities in the field of energy
2004 HPC USER FORUMS:
October 21, 2004, Geneva, Switzerland
Senior representatives from leading user and vendor organizations attended
the HPC User Forum meeting at CERN last week and heard presentations on new
developments and major issues from CERN, Ohio Supercomputer Center, SARA,
Boeing, Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, Centro Svizzero di Calcolo
Scientifico (CSCS) and CINECA.
September 29 to 31, 2004, Tucson, Arizona
The semi-annual U.S. meeting last week explored the current state of HPC in
the life sciences, current and emerging programming models and benchmarking
activities, and major government HPC programs
April 15, 16 and 17, 2004, Dearborn, Michigan
A record 117 people attended the semi-annual HPC User Forum meeting held in
Dearborn, Michigan. The major focus of the two-day Dearborn meeting was on
user requirements for structural analysis, interconnects and I/O, according
to Steering Committee Chairman Paul Muzio, VP-Government Programs for
Network Computing Systems, Inc. and Support Infrastructure Director of the
Army High Performance Computing Research Center. The group also discussed
the future technical agenda for the HPC User Forum.

The second set of international HPC User Forum meetings.
September 16, 17 and 18, 2003, Princeton, New Jersey
A record 110 attendees participated in the semi-annual HPC User Forum
meeting held in Princeton, New Jersey. The major focus areas for the
Princeton meeting were computational chemistry, and performance modeling
and benchmarking, according to Steering Committee Chairman Larry Davis, of
the DoD HPC Modernization Program.
May 20 to 25, 2003, Bristol, UK and Annecy, France
The HPC User Forum, consisting of high performance computing users from
government, industry and academia, held its first two dialogue meetings
between European and U.S. users in Bristol, UK and Annecy, France
April 7, 8 and 9, 2003, Sundance, Utah
A record 96 attendees gathered in Sundance, Utah for the HPC User Forum’s
semi-annual meeting. The main focus of the Sundance meeting was on the
future of high-bandwidth, high-end systems in a market increasingly
dominated by COTS-based products.
